Understanding your cat behavior

Each cat is different, but there are some signs that you can watch out for. It’s important to be attentive to your cat’s behavior. Any changes in cat behavior could indicate that they are unhappy, stressed, sick, injured, stressed, or afraid. Here are some things to watch out for in order to keep your cat happy.

There are signs that your cat might have a problem

You might notice your cat being stressed or afraid.

  • You are more likely to groom yourself than you might think.
  • Hiding
  • A hunched-up position for sleeping
  • Change their eating and/or bathroom habits
  • Indoor spraying
  • You might notice your cat if they are in pain or scared.
  • Aggression is an example of a new and undesirable behavior.
  • People disappearing or being avoided

Talk to your vet if any of these symptoms persist.

How to make your cat happy

These are some tips to keep your cat happy and lessen the chance of them becoming problematic.

You need to make sure your cat can reach all the things they need. Cats can be scared easily so ensure they have everything they need.

  • Provide hiding places for your cat. If your cat is afraid and has no escape or hiding place, it may become aggressive. If they are afraid, make sure they have safe hiding places that they can retreat to.
  • Keep them busy – cats need to be active even though they sleep most of the day. Provide indoor activities for them to be active if they aren’t outside.
  • Get them a scratching board –Cats use scratching posts to mark territory, strengthen their claws, and strengthen their muscles. For indoor cats, make sure your cat has sturdy scratching posts they can use fully stretched.
  • Get them toys – Play is a great way to get your cat moving and having fun. Give your cat safe toys and give them opportunities to play with other people. You can entertain your cat by giving them puzzle feeders or hiding dried food.

Kindness is the key! Do not punish or shout at your cat. They are unlikely to understand you and may become more anxious or scared.

Stop your cat hunting wild animals

The natural instinct of a cat to hunt prey is its natural instinct, but there are real concerns about domestic cats impacting the well-being of wildlife. We recommend the following:

  • Keep them indoors at dusk or dawn, when wildlife is at its most active.
  • Keep them indoors after heavy rain to let birds out to feed.
  • Attaching a bell on a safety collar that is quick-release.
